UK: Landfill fire sparks battery warning

Viridor has said lithium ion batteries "are the likely cause" for setting 300 tonnes of waste on fire last month.

The fire at the the landfill, next to Viridor’s recently completed Dunbar EfW plant, took more than 40 hours and, at its height, 40 firefighters and six fire trucks to tackle.

Viridor scottish landfill manager, Barry Falgate, said: "Our experience of observing, and extinguishing, fires developing on waste sites leads us to believe this may have been a lithium ion battery.

"If this had been disposed of correctly, the fire would not have occurred and would have saved the valuable time and resources of the fire and rescue service."
