The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has issued a warning over an emerging “new trend” in waste crime.
According to a statement issued yesterday, SEPA has found two abandoned trailers full of waste and is currently trying to trace the owners.
SEPA said that while illegally depositing waste in fields, barns and premises “is a known issue”, the abandoned trailers “indicate a new, emerging trend in waste crime” in Scotland.
Earlier this month, ENDS reported the UK government missed out on around £275m (€314.2m) or 28% of what it should have received in taxes through “misclassification” of landfill waste in 2018/19 – a sign that a large amount of waste was being disposed of illegally.
